I know that “the streets” might not feel this one, but as someone who is a Senior IT professional and a self-confessed computer nerd, it warms my heart to see that the video for the hot new single “Brooklyn Go Hard,” is actually an open source word cloud done by Evan Roth. And yes, even though this looks like the doings of a random computer nerd, it’s apparently official:
Last week I was contacted to make a video for a new Kanye West produced Jay-Z song for RED & the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa. It launched today (World AIDS Day) at red.msn.com. And while Im happy to be able to help the cause Im also more than a little bit excited about getting a chance to make something for the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye.
Even also provides a link to download the source code, so nerds like me can create their own videos.
Personally, I feel that this is very dope and very creative, but I understand people who don’t get it. Even so, is this the first open source rap video?

**M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” will be claimed by hip hop because of the rapping on it, all the freestyles over the beat and frankly because it was sampled on S.L.U., which is nominated for Best Rap Song. Sidebar: Imagine those four getting on stage to accept one of the two awards they’re nominated for.
In case you’re wondering, both Kanye & Jay’s 6th nomination is for Carter III. Complete list available here or here. Discuss.
Bost & Bim Ft Brisa Roché & Lone Ranger - Jamaican Boy
(I must thank Gilles Peterson for this one.) The Parisian duo of Bost & Bim do one thing, and do one thing well–remix popular music with a reggae twist. On their MySpace page, they rework everything from Justin Timberlake to Marvin Gaye. However, their rework of Estelle’s American Boy is stellar. With French (county?) singer Brisa Roché (website probably not safe for work…you know how the French do) taking over Estelle’s part, the track is a simple, yet effective rework of the Kanye produced tune. You can cop Jamaican Boy on iTunes.
The track is available for download at iTunes as well as on vinyl 7 inch soon.
I need everyones opinion on this song (that means leave comments for some of you smart dumb cats). I “executive produced” (found the beat/it was a favorite of mine, etc.) this single for a mixtape I am hosting with The Paxtons, a dope group out of DC by way of Chicago.
Gotta love Funny Or Die and their random exclusives.
Here’s a musical about Prop 8 starring Jack Black, John C Reilly, Margaret Cho, Maya Rudolph and a whole lot of other familiar faces. Pretty funny and insightful.
The award winning Glightfilms production team produced this music video featuring Grammy nominated artist Raheem Devaughn, Anwan Glover aka Big G, the HBOs hit series The Wire and NBCs Law and Order and founding member of the Backyard Band, Miss Kim, lead female vocalist of Rare Essence, Jamil Face Johnson, Wale, Hazel, King Pin Slim, and Duce Your Highness, Washington Redskin and close friend of Sean Taylor Chris Samuels, and Redskins fans from the entire Washington DC area.
I’m addicted to Colin Munroe’s new project Colin Munroe Is The Unsung Hero, for real. There are so many great songs on here it’s kinda scary. If you haven’t downloaded it yet then you really need to do so ASAP! And if you are kind of skeptical then check out this joint called Piano Lessons featuring Joell Ortiz and produced by Black Milk……pretty nuts.
So two clever fellows, one a Brit and the other a Frenchman, took it upon themselves to sneak to the top of the worlds tallest building in (STILL under construction), the BURJ DUBAI and jump off its top floor at 650 meters (2,132 feet). If that isn’t some dare devil **** then I don’t know what is! I fancy myself a risk taker but I’m not sure if I could push myself to free fall from that height, at least not right away, heh. Anyway, those clever fellows also managed to film the entire caper, and its very interesting. Give it a looker.
New joint from one of the dopest artists out right now, Drake. He’s like the only cat right now that can drop song after song and not annoy me. Anyway, he just leaked his version of Kanye’s Say You Will and honestly I’ve been waiting for someone to flex over this beat since I heard it, and what better person than Toronto’s own.
