Video: Young Guru Interview w/ Rap Radar Pts. 2-4

Thu Mar 04 11:00:06 -0800 2010

On Monday, Jay-Z’s engineer-turnt-DJ Young Guru stopped by the RR mansion after getting off the plane from NC and celebrating his birthday in Atlanta with 9th Wonder and Young Jeezy.

In the second part of the interview, he responds to Dr. Cornel West’s claim that Jay lost his hunger, his private philanthropy, the freemasonry misconception and Jay expanding the culture. After the jump, he talks about the public’s reception of Blueprint 3, the Beanie Sigel beef and the infamous “Oh Boy” session. In the last part he talks about hackers and the measures he’s taken to protect himself from piracy even though he knows most the tricks of the trade.

There’s some great insight here from someone who rarely speaks but who’s been around for the past 11+ years and has seen a lot and that clearly knows a lot too. Props to RapRadar

Video: Mikkey Halsted Interview w/ Mixtape Daily

Thu Mar 04 09:00:03 -0800 2010

You would think that if Kanye West produced your demo with beats he hand-selected for you, you would be good to go. Now if that demo somehow found its way into the hands of Cash Money Records CEO Birdman, you’d definitely be topping the charts in no time. As a teenager, Mikkey Halsted was lucky enough to experience both of those scenarios, although things ended up not working out as planned.

Find out about Mikkey Halsted’s long history as well as his new album with Kanye’s mentor No I.D. The Darkroom, at MTV.

“It’s really going to be my first album and it’s really going to be done the way I want the way No ID and I wanted to do it if we didn’t have any label interference,” Halsted said. “But it’s just a good thing. I’ve been through so many different things in a short period of time, so thank God I started as a teenager so, you know, you feel like you matured now, you ready for everything that’s coming.”

Reality DJs: The Wizards NYC

Thu Mar 04 07:20:07 -0800 2010

ThisIs50.com and Hot 97 have teamed up to produce an internet reality show called The Wizards NYC a docu-series that will shed light on three of New Yorks most well known and successful DJs. The premise of the show is to give an in-depth look into the lives of the guys many consider to be the anonymous heroes of the DJ booth; guys who never really seem to get their due shine even though they are the ones who continuously control and rock the crowds:

Brooklyns DJ Enuff was one of the first Hispanic DJs to break through in New York. Mentored by DJ Red Alert, Enuff became the DJ to envy when he scored the ultimate gig of being Tour DJ for the Notorious B.I.G. back in 1994. He continues to hold down the number afternoon spot on Hot 97.

Queens own DJ Camilo became well known as the in-house DJ for Queens hot-spot, Club Casablanca. Pushing mixtapes since the 90s, Camilo who is now a married father of two is currently struggling with the slow loss of his hearing and vocal cords; but he refuses to let that slow him down by continuing to make major moves with his own mix show on Hot 97 and as a promoter for his artist, Juganot.

Reppin the Bronx is DJ Cipha Sounds someone who is no stranger to the cameras but still remains to live on the low. Cipha who was mentored by DJ Flex currently stays extremely busy hosting Cipha Sounds Effect on Sirius Satellite Radios Shade45, hosting MTV2s hip hop countdown, Sucka Free and running New Yorks number one morning show on Hot 97.

All three are ready to let the world see the true life of a working DJ: ‘The glitz, the glamour and the grind’.

 WIN!

TiVO Steps its Game Up For Music Fans

Thu Mar 04 07:00:02 -0800 2010

If it werent for my DVR I would probably miss half of the crap that comes on TV. Commercial watching has become a thing of my past thanks to my handy fast forward button on my remote control. But it looks as though the DVR may have some major competition headed its way.

TiVO, the creators of pause & effect TV are set out to reclaim the top spot by introducing a new pair of models called Premier and Premier XL, which will function as an all purpose Media Device. Yup now after being out in the mix all day listening to your iPod, you can go home and have some of those same apps available on your TV. This new version is set to entice music heads by offering Youtube to watch internet videos and Pandora Radio. Couch potatoes will also have services such as Amazon, Blockbuster and Netflix to keep them entertained while chilling at the crib.

Oh: And as an added bonus; the Premiers will also have the ability to scan through 30 seconds of commercials in about one second, making advertising almost non-existent.

I doubt Ill be checking for TiVO - even with all their new fancy work, but something tell me that makers of the DVR will soon be hopping on the band wagon and releasing their own versions soon enough.

//Movies// A Nightmare on Elm Street Movie {Trailer #2}

Thu Mar 04 05:40:21 -0800 2010

The more I see and read about this film, the more I look forward to seeing it. Jack Earle Haley looks and sounds MONEY as Freddy, and the nods to the original film are visible even in the trailer here (hand in the bathtub, Freddy stretching his face through the wall, etc). I don’t wanna get my hopes too high, but it looks like Platinum Dunes have something good going here. Only time will tell though.

I Dont Know Who Desha & Dayana Are, But This Is Dope

Thu Mar 04 05:20:23 -0800 2010

I saw that UNI let this one loose yesterday and I was quick to burn it to a disc and throw it in the whip. I remember hearing it almost 2 years ago when they were performing some new material from the then EP version of A Love Supreme. It wont make “2.0″ because of the sample of course, but its still dope.

80 Years Old, Addicted To The Game

Thu Mar 04 05:00:21 -0800 2010

This face that was made for radio belongs to Doris Thompson. She’s 80 years old and she has been burglarizing medical suites since they had seperate water fountains for blacks and whites. Her rap sheet dates back to 1955 and shes been in the slammer 9 times during her “career”. Her most recent bust had her laying low in a bathroom until a facility was closed then made off with some stamps, $400 in cash and a plastic piss container (I know, wtf?). Like a true O.G, she told the judge that 3 years probably would be enough time. Doris, we salute you.

She said Thompson told the judge she probably deserved a longer sentence.

“I don’t think this will stop her from doing this again,” Paccione said. “She’s not really apologetic about it. This is her thing.”

Artists: Dont Drop a Full LP Just Put Out Mixtapes, Hop on Other Peoples Tracks and Tour

Thu Mar 04 04:20:21 -0800 2010

Theres like nothing like the hype before an album drops. I remember waiting on pins and needles for Snoops debut album, Doggystyle to be released. The work he contributed to (Dr. Dres) The Chronic was so extremely tight that everyone just knew his debut would not disappoint. And it didnt: Doggystyle sold 800,000 copies in its first week and literally turned Snoop into a household name almost instantly. However, things were different back in those days and a feat such as that is nearly impossible today; and thats why it may be best for some artists to just skip all that whole album non-sense and strictly drop mixtapes, hop on other peoples songs and get their tour on.

A friend and I were recently discussing the success of Canadian bread MC/singer, Drake. We marveled at the fact that hes one of the most popular rappers on the planet right now, with rock-star treatment and accolades coming out of his azz, yet homeboy hasnt even dropped an official full length album. Let me just list a couple of those accolades I speak of:

Within a year Drake has started a massive major label bidding war, won two BET Hip Hop Awards (one for ‘Rookie of the Year’ and one for ‘Track of the Year’ for Every Girl) and was nominated for five; he received two Grammy nods one even for Best Solo Performance, one VMA nomination and two from MOBO. He has graced countless magazine covers, is a daily fixture on music blogs, has received props from almost every celeb out there, rides around in limos and flies to gigs in private jets. Hmmm this dude may rhyme about wanting to be Successful call me crazy - but doesn’t  it seem as though he pretty much already is?

Case in point number two: Nicki Minaj.

The 26 year old Queens rapper (who is also another daily blog fixture) has been releasing mixtapes since 2007 with her latest Beam Me Up Scotty being her official breakthrough. She is signed to Lil Waynes Young Money Entertainment label (coincidentally, so is Drake) and has been considered by many to be the female that brings female MCs back into the mix. This girl from what I hear is paid some serious dough to show up at clubs to perform and has a fan base that is steady growing by the minute. Yet, details on the exact release date of her full LP seem to be kept on the way hush from both she and her label; and in fact she recently had this to say (to MTV) about her plans:

With the album, just like with my mixtape, I never like to rush it. With the album, I think its more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again. Before I drop an album, people need to come out and see… I need to work the people up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that then the album will come. Honestly, Id love to put an album out this year, but I dont believe in rushing things either. Well see.

Im starting to think that maybe a new strategy is beginning to form and it appears to be working. The anticipation of a full length Drake album is bubbling over and what is fueling that hype is the label making people wait and only eluding to release dates. In the meantime people are flocking to see him perform and checking for every guest appearance he makes just to keep themselves satisfied.

On the other hand when you have an album mixtape like Drakes So Far Gone, that was so triumphant (with a record breaking 2,000 downloads in its first the two hours), the pressure for the album to live up to that (and actually sale opposed to being offered as a free download ) can be immensely high. And there’s also a chance that the comparisons may in fact hinder its success -making it a dud next to its predecessors acomplishments. Which is why releasing only mixtapes may be somewhat on the ’safer’ side.

Only time will tell how Drake and Nicki Minja’s career will pan out. But it may be wise for them both to consider that old saying that sounds cliché but holds some solid truth: If ain’t broke - don’t try and fix it.
